Rune speeds up at the ATP Finals in Turin and Ruud slows down in Basel

The danish Holger Runefirst seed, advanced to the ATP Finals in Turin by defeating Argentine Sebastian baez and reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Basel, where the Norwegian bid farewell Casper Ruudsecond seed, eliminated by the Swiss Dominic Stricker.

The Dane, who had lost the last two matches he had arranged with the Argentine, won 7-6(2) and 6-1, in eighty-six minutes. Báez held his nerve in the first set but faltered afterward.

Rune, who had only managed to win one match since Wimbledon before coming to Basel, will play in the quarterfinals with another Argentine, Tomas Martín Etcheverry.

The ATP Finals, however, were complicated for Norwegian Casper Ruud who was outclassed by local Stricker. The Swiss achieved his second victory against the top ten after defeating the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open.

It took the Swiss two hours and 24 minutes to close out the victory over the world’s eighth ranked tennis player by 6-4, 3-6 and 7-6(1). Stricker will play in the quarterfinals, his first win on the circuit since 2021, with Frenchman Ugo Humbert holding off seventh-seeded Chilean Nicolás Jarry.

Australian Alex de Miñaur, fifth seed, was also eliminated from the competition, surpassed by Dutch Tallon Griekspor and American Taylor Fritz, third seed, with two match points and disrupted his presence in the ATP Finals after being defeated by Russian Alexander Shevchenko.
