The Gipuzkoan youth football festival in Zubieta ended this Sunday with the celebration of the title of Vasconia, the new junior champion of the Real Sociedad Christmas Tournament. The team of San Sebastian beat a fighting Martutene on penalties, after drawing goalless in regulation time, in a final of two revelation teams, due to the football and power shown in all the previous stages.
The blue and black team reached the grand final undefeated, after defeating Tolosa (2-0) in the semifinals, Aloña Mendi and Anaitasuna in the second stage, and Pasaia, Sporting, Zumaiako and Intxurre in the first, giving only two ties. For its part, Vasconia won every game in regulation time en route to the final. Real Unión, Texas and Billabona in the first stage, Aretxabaleta and Lagun Onak in the second, and Arrupe Chaminade in the semifinals (1-0) fell to the maroons. The final, very close, went to a penalty shootout and was also on the verge of sudden death, but bad luck made a good save by the Martutene goalkeeper in a goal for Vasconia.
The youth of Vasconia celebrated the victory in style in the presence of several royalist councilors, in addition to Txurdin and a legend like Luis Arconada, who was not entirely happy because his grandson played for Martutene. He came close to co-starring in a picture of champions. They also closely followed the contest Xabi Prieto, Mikel Labaka or Roberto Olabe (father and son), among others.
Third place in the tournament went to Arrupe Chaminade, completing a San Sebastian podium rarely seen, and moving Tolosa to fourth place. The other contestants who competed in the second round were Danena, Kostkas, Añorga, Anaitasuna, Aloña Mendi, Arrasate, Aretxabaleta and Lagun Onak, who did not defend their title in the qualifying rounds. Everyone enjoyed a great Sunday of football in a packed Zubieta.
