Guardiola and Rodri’s City
Manchester City put an end to 2023 in their first Club World Cup, beating Fluminense in the grand final 4-0, and confirming themselves as the best team to beat in the world. The successes of the English team cannot be explained without the enormous contribution of two Spaniards such as coach Pep Guardiola and pivot Rodri Hernández. Guardiola already has 37 titles as a coach in just 15 years of career and became the only coach to win four Club World Cups, surpassing Carlo Ancelotti’s three. Only Sir Alex Ferguson, with 49 trophies, has a higher record than Pep as a coach, but if Santpedor continues at this pace, it won’t be long before he surpasses the Scot’s records. Rodri deserves a special mention. The midfielder won the Club World Cup MVP as the culmination of a year to remember, in which he was also selected as MVP in the Champions League final, including a decisive goal, and in the Nations League with Spain. Rodri’s growth since his arrival at City has been exponential and he deserves more recognition with awards such as the Ballon d’Or or The Best. Without him, I highly doubt that Manchester City would have won everything they celebrated in 2023. We will see if in 2024 they can maintain this level and confirm their hegemony.

Rebecca Welch, pioneering referee
English referee Rebecca Welch continued to break barriers for equality and became the first woman to referee a Premier League match, Fulham-Burnley. In 2021, Welch made history by becoming the first woman to officiate a professional football match in the United Kingdom, Port Vale-Harrogate in League Two (the English fourth division). In her Premier League debut, Rebecca Welch followed in the footsteps of Frenchwoman Stéphanie Frappart, a Ligue 1 referee after overcoming many obstacles. A good example to follow.

Suárez joined the culé clan in Miami
After a productive season at Gremio de Porto Alegre, Luis Suárez became a new player of Inter Miami and there he will be reunited with his good friends Leo Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. The four made history at Barça and now they will be looking to repeat the successes of the Florida franchise. The four would be a great attraction for MLS.

The Detroit Pistons, who have the worst streak in NBA history
The Detroit Pistons tied the worst losing streak in NBA history with 26, after losing on Saturday against the Brooklyn Nets (126-115). The Pistons thus join the Philadelphia 76ers of 2013-2014 and the Cleveland Cavaliers of 2010-2011 as the worst in history. Now they will play again against Brooklyn and they can be alone with this negative statistic.
