About 70 people have been killed in new Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, according to the Health Ministry, which is controlled by the Islamist Hamas.
A ministry spokesman said on Sunday that several families had been affected in the Al-Maghasi refugee district in the central part of the narrow coastal strip.
Bodies of five hostages recovered from tunnel network
The Israeli army, in turn, reported the rescue of a total of five hostages from a tunnel network in the northern Gaza Strip.
The remains of the men and women kidnapped from Israel on October 7 were found in a very extensive and deep tunnel system in the vicinity of the Jabalia refugee district.
According to the Jerusalem Post, two of the bodies were found two weeks ago. Three more were discovered a few days later.
The information could not initially be independently verified. The Israeli military said it is investigating the reported attack on the refugee camp. It is likely that the number will rise further. “What is happening in the Maghazi camp is a massacre in a busy residential area,” the report said.
“Terrible massacre”
Several houses were damaged. It is likely that the number will rise further. The radical Islamist group Hamas condemned the attack as a “terrible massacre” and “a new war crime” by Israel.
- Israel has killed about 8,000 Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip so far, according to a military spokesman. The number comes from counts after targeted attacks and battles on the ground, as well as from interrogations of prisoners.
- According to UN estimates, there are currently approximately 50,000 pregnant women living in the embattled Gaza Strip. More than 180 births take place every day.
- The situation of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip is very dire in many places. People are camping in makeshift tent camps or outdoors as the weather continues to deteriorate.
- According to the UN Emergency Relief Agency, more than 1.9 million people in the Gaza Strip are now internally displaced, or about 85 percent of the population.
- The UN High Commissioner again called for a humanitarian ceasefire on Sunday. This is the only way to reach those in need in the blockaded coastal strip, secure the release of hostages and prevent further displacement and, above all, further loss of life.
