Still hurt by staying in Panama on the sideline of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Spanish-Danish coach Thomas Christiansen announced on Thursday that he is ready to sign a renewal of his contract as coach (it will expire on June 30) because he wants to help improve the country’s football and classify it into a World Cup.
“I don’t want to leave this situation. I want to participate in the World Cup, achieving goals, leaving a legacy and improving Panama’s soccer,” Christiansen said at a press conference.
Laughing, the 49-year-old ex-soccer player said that to continue on the Panama bench “only one signature is missing.” Among others, he played for FC Barcelkona, Sporting Gijón. Osasuna, Racing Santander, Oviedo, Villarreal and Terrassa.
Prepare for the Nations League debut
Christiansen also specified the Concacaf Nations League match that La Roja will play on June 2 against the Costa Rican team at the Rommel Fernández stadium.
“There’s not much difference with Costa Rica that we saw in the qualifying round (for the 2022 World Cup). They’re not coming to give anything, neither are we, even if we’re a bit hurt because of that position they have. Taken was ours ”, Christiansen said when citing fourth place in the octagonal Concacaf final that gave Ticos the right to play the playoffs for Qatar.
Panama finished the World Cup qualifiers in fifth place.
Christiansen assured that the game will “serve as motivation to the players” because they want to win the League of Nations and Costa Rica is the first hurdle they must overcome.
“There’s a clear goal for this tournament and that is to get into the semifinals, and consider winning it,” Christiansen added.
