He Birmingham City named Tony Mowbray as their new manager on Monday after sacking former England captain Wayne Rooney last week. The Championship side say the former player, 60, has agreed terms on a two-and-a-half-year contract and will coach his team for the first time this Monday.
Mowbray will be Birmingham’s third manager of the season. He was previously in charge of rivals Sunderland, leading them to the promotion playoffs in May, but was sacked in December. He also managed Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, Coventry City and Celtic and Hibernian in Scotland.
“Tony was the standout candidate in our search for a new manager. His knowledge and passion for the game shined through,” City co-owner and chairman Tom Wagner said in a statement. “He shares our ambition and will bring stability at an important time for our great club. We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from everyone we have spoken to about Tony.”
Birmingham were sixth when Rooney was appointed but fell to 20th place, six points above the relegation zone, when he was sacked after winning just two of his 15 games in charge.
