Eduardo Berizzo, former Athletic coach, among other teams, has been appointed as Chile’s new coach. The Argentine coach’s main goal is to qualify La Roja for the 2026 World Cup. His arrival comes after the dismissal of Martín Lasarte, the coach who also has a past in LaLiga that failed to get the Chilean team into the Qatar World Cup.
Chile are watching Berizzo as they hope to recover from another disappointing performance in South American qualifying for this year’s World Cup finals. Pablo Milad, president of the Chilean Football Association, said Berizzo’s signing was due to his knowledge of football in the Andean country and extensive international experience. “We wish him the best of luck,” Milad said.
Uruguayan Martín Lasarte was sacked in April after Chile failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second consecutive time. La Roja is seventh in the ten-nation qualifying group but is challenging Ecuador’s place in the final tournament in Qatar later this year due to a suspected ineligible player.
Surprisingly, Paraguay, under Berizzo’s own direction, finished eighth in that qualifying phase. The Argentine coach was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s working group on the Chilean national team between 2007 and 2011. Then, in addition to Athletic, he worked as a coach at Celta and Sevilla.
