The defamation complaint filed by Karim Benzema against the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, was dismissed on Tuesday, as announced today by Rémy Heitz, attorney general of the Court of Cassation.
Darmanin said in October in an interview that Benzema, a former Lyon and Real Madrid striker who now plays for Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, has “known” ties to the Islamist organization Muslim Brotherhood.
Your honor is not ruined
The Requests Commission of the Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) “considers that Mr. Benzema’s complaint”, received on January 16, “refers to comments that do not relate to him any facts that could harm his honor or his consideration”according to Heitz’s press release.
“This decision of the Commission of Requests, composed of three justices from the headquarters of the Court of Cassation, two Councilors of State and two senior advisers from the Court of Auditors, is not subject to any appeal.” Heitz pointed out.
The Court of Justice of the Republic (CJR) is the only jurisdiction empowered to prosecute and try members of the government for crimes committed in the execution of their duties.
Benzema’s message that caused the conflict
The conflict started in October when Benzema posted on the social network a message of support to the Palestinian people for Israel’s “unjust bombing” in response to Hamas terrorist attacks.
Days later, Darmanin assured the Cnews television channel that “Mr. Benzema has links, everyone knows it, it is known, to the Muslim Brotherhood.”
Muslim Brothers is an Islamist organization born in Egypt, where it is present considered a terroristlike in Saudi Arabia, where Benszema now plays.
In his complaint Benzema argued that these the accusations were “inaccurate”, “probably untrue, but in any case done on purpose” and “attacking” his honor and reputation.
Benzema reaffirmed that he “never had the slightest connection to the Muslim Brotherhood organization, nor knowledge of anyone who claims it.”
