He died in peace , surrounded by his loved ones.
The former Porto, Benfica and Belenenses striker, who celebrated his 78th birthday on February 13, distinguished himself in a long coaching career, including two seasons at PSG (1991, 1994 and then 1998-99) , two spells at FC Porto (1984- 87 and 1989-91), Matra-Racing (1987-1989), Benfica (1994-95), Portuguese national team (1996-97) and US Créteil (2006-07). His career as a coach also allowed him to have a double experience in Saudi Arabia (1999 to 2001), at Al Nassr and then at Al Hilal, but also in Russia (2003-04) and at the head of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon (2004-06).
His most famous success came as a coach with Porto, when on May 27, 1987 the Portuguese team won the European Cup final against Bayern Munich (2-1). They had two aces at the top, the Portuguese Paulo Futre and the Algerian Rabah Madjer, who defeated a German team led by Michael Rummenigge, the recently deceased Andreas Brehme and the middle Lothar Matthäus.
