Fernando Alonso finished with a bad taste in the mouth Australian GP despite having a good career on the circuit of Albert Park. The Asturian used strategy to climb back up to sixth place, having had a good fight against George Russell, which ended in an accident at the end. When it seemed like it was all over, Mercedes said that Fernando had caused the Briton’s accident by braking too early at the entrance to Turn 6. The result was a 20 second penalty to finish eighth.
Aston Martin alleged that Alonso was having battery discharge problems and because of this he braked earlier to defend his position. However, this was not enough for the stewards and the penalty was confirmed hours later to the disappointment of the two-time champion.
“In the last laps, George caught me quickly. I knew he was coming, and then he was in the DRS zone for five or six laps, so I dedicated myself to doing qualifying laps to stay ahead“
“I wanted to maximize my speed coming out of Turn 6 to defend him. That’s what any race driver would do, and it doesn’t seem dangerous to me. “It’s disappointing to receive punishment from the stewards for racing in such a harsh but fair way,” he said.
Mike Krack, surprised
The Aston Martin boss also did not understand the FIA’s decision but was less critical when it came to taking the punishment. “It’s surprising to see Fernando drop to eighth position because of the post-race penalty, but we have to accept the decision. But it won’t distract us from a positive day,” he said in a Silverstone team statement.
