CAS rejected the IBA’s appeal against the IOC’s non-recognition

Date:

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) this Tuesday dismissed the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) appeal against the IOC’s decision to withdraw its recognition.adopted on June 22, 2023.

The CAS panel responsible for the case assessed that as of the date of the appealed decision the IBA had not met the conditions set for its recognition by the IOC, voting in favor of its withdrawal by 69-1, with 10 abstention, following the recommendation of its Executive Committee.

In particular, TAD points out that IBA has not increased its transparency and financial sustainability, including through revenue diversification.

It also did not change its process regarding referees and judges to ensure their integrity, including the monitoring period for its own competitions before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, or ensure the full and effective implementation of all measures proposed the “Group of Governance Reform” established by the IOC, which provided for a cultural change.

CAS considered that these three elements justified the decision made by the IOC Session in June 2023 to withdraw its recognition of the IBA and highlighted the right of the IBA to control the circumstances and conditions for granting recognition is more than the personality rights of OTHERS.

The IBA has temporarily withdrawn its recognition since 2019, after the IOC, after the Rio 2016 Games, it needs to adopt measures to address serious problems related to its governance and financial stability.

The IOC’s proposal does not mean that boxing will disappear from the Olympic Games, whose program is the same in Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028, although Olympic competition will not be regulated by the IBA.
