just a week ago Fernando Alonso announced that it had reached an agreement with Aston Martin to extend their relationship by signing a multi-year contract that will last at least 2026. That means the Spaniard will run at least 45 years old. A rage that leaves no one indifferent considering that has 382 Grand Prix behind him and this season he will break the 400 barrier.
The pilots accompanying the Spaniard were certainly asked about this longevity in the press conference before the Chinese GP. Names like Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon or Charles Leclerc gave up on Fernando.
“It takes a lot of dedication. I think Alonso lacks any definition and it shows in what he does on and off the track. It depends on what one wants to do. But it’s rare to see anyone who spends a lot of time in a sport. In fact, it is not seen in any other sport. I don’t think anyone at that age competes for so long at this high level. I think this is potentially something that will never be seen in F1 again. and if it is seen it will be very strange. A lot of respect for it and I don’t know if I’ll want to continue in 20 years,” Norris commented.
“I have a lot of respect for Fernando. From a young age I saw him competing against Schumacher and they both instilled in me a love for the sport. To compete now with Alonso is something incredible. Look at the career he’s had… almost everything he’s competed in he’s won and it’s something beyond extraordinary. It would be a dream for any pilot. I don’t know if I will continue racing at his age. Your dedication is exemplary for all of us,” he said Or with.
“The first race I saw in 2004 was Alonso competing and it’s still here at a high level,” laughs Zhou.
“It’s hard to imagine myself in 15 or 18 years and still in F1 but seeing how motivated Fernando is and to the level he is… you realize that age doesn’t matter, it’s a number. “For me, I would love to compete in F1 for many years but I would also like to try other disciplines like Le Mans,” said Leclerc.
