Georgia request will be submitted for Tbilisi host the final of Champions League in 2028 on its new stadium, which will be built on that date, the Prime Minister of Georgia announced today, Irakli Kobajidze.
“We decided to apply to host the final of Champions League in our new stadium,” said the head of Government in a meeting with members of his Cabinet
Kobajidze announced that Georgia will build a “new ultra-modern stadium with a capacity for 70,000 spectators”, which he described as a “megaproject”.
“This will give us the possibility to host matches at the highest level, including Champions League final“, said.
According to the head of the Georgian Government, “it will be a British-style stadium, without athletics tracks, to allow a more emotional relationship between athletes and fans.”
He added that the new stadium, which will also be able to host rugby matches, will be built in the neighborhood of Vaziani, 25 kilometers from the capital of Georgia, next to the new airport, without specifying the budget for the works.
The current stadium, Dynamo Arenabuilt during the Soviet era and rebuilt after the independence of Georgiahas a capacity of 55,000 spectators.
In 2015, it hosted the UEFA Super Cupwhere Barcelona beat Sevilla 5-4.
Previously, the Government approved the construction project of the new airport of Tbilisiwith a capacity of up to 19 million passengers annually and an estimated cost of 1,260 million dollars.
