The president of Atlético de Madrid, Enrique Cerezobelieves that in the “sad” situation that the Spanish Football Federation is going through “the best thing is to make it completely new” and “change everything” in the institution.
Cerezo made these statements at the third “Ser futbol” meeting he organized Radio Rioja-Cadena Ser on the campus of the University of La Rioja, in Logroño, and where former professional players from Racing de Santander – among others – also participated, Pablo Pinillosand the coach of the Athletic de Bilbao women’s team David Aznar.
Before entering the auditorium, Cerezo avoided speaking to the media about the situation of the Spanish Football Federation, after this Thursday the Higher Sports Council decided to “protect” the entity through a supervisory commission.
But when inside the event, when asked by the attendees, he remembered that he belonged to the bodies of the Federation “when we had a great president”, in reference to Ángel María Villar “that he is emerging unscathed from almost all trials,” he said, referring to judicial proceedings opened against the former head of the federation for issues related to his governance.
““What is happening in that institution now is a disgrace, to see it in the hands of the State is very sad and it is something that must be resolved as soon as possible.”said the president of Atlético de Madrid.
A solution for him involves the creation of a “new Federation” because “all that remains of the present will have problems” and “although within it there will certainly be honest people of great value , in this situation the best thing is to change everything” , he insists.
NO TO VAR, YES TO GOAL CAMERA
Cerezo also referred to the controversy in one of the plays in the match between andl Real Madrid and Barcelonawhere the referee did not give a goal when he interpreted that the ball had not fully entered the home team’s goal and defended that he was in favor of a goal camera that intervenes in these situations but, on the contrary, will be removed the VAR.
So, he defended that “most referees call what they see” but ““Now with VAR, instead of just him making a mistake, three people make a mistake and they do it after waiting for ten minutes.”
Furthermore, it is a system (VAR) that is “worth a million” and “the goal cameras are, in comparison, a small amount and will be something that will not bring doubts, it will be determined if it is a goal or not.”
In his speech, the president of Atlético de Madrid stressed that his club “is no longer the pupas” but ““one of Europe’s greats” thanks to the fact that “we found a good coach because the new field allowed us to take an important step” and “soon we will have the best sports city on the continent.”
Cerezo describes his team’s season as “normal”“because “at the beginning of each year we always set our first goal to do well in the Copa del Rey, reach the quarterfinals in the Champions League and re-qualify for that competition” and “the first two have been achieved and in the third with us” where “although it hasn’t been a great year, we’re there”.
