Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mykola Solskyj, who was suspected of corruption, has resigned. The parliament in Kiev will discuss this in one of the upcoming plenary sessions, the parliament speaker writes on the messenger app Telegram. According to media reports, Solskyj is involved in the illegal acquisition of state land.
According to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, Solskyj has appropriated state land worth millions. Together with other stakeholders, the ex-chairman of the agricultural commission acquired 1,250 plots of land with an area of almost 2,500 hectares, the anti-corruption bureau said on Tuesday.
State-owned land
According to the information, between 2017 and 2021, land owned by a state-owned company in the northern Ukrainian region of Sumy was transferred to new owners. Solskyj’s agricultural holding company subsequently started using it. In addition to the minister, employees of the land registry are also suspected of corruption. The attempt to acquire more than 3,200 hectares was thwarted.
The minister has rejected the accusations
On Wednesday, the minister denied all allegations, but at the same time admitted that in 2017 and 2018 he worked as a lawyer in a land dispute between state-owned companies and physical persons. Legal proceedings are still ongoing here. “For my part, I guarantee absolute transparency in determining the truth,” the lawyer wrote.
Solskyj was elected a member of the Supreme Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, in 2019 on the presidential party’s list during the early parliamentary elections initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The lawyer led the Agriculture Committee from 2019 until his appointment as Minister of Agriculture in March 2022.
