BMW announces new MotoGP regulations

Date:

BMW is closer than ever to MotoGP and a large part of the blame lies with Markus Flasch. The new CEO of BMW Motorrad, a position he assumed last November replacing Markus Schramm, is passionate about motorcycling and recently said that “I know those responsible for MotoGP and we are a brand with a presence in the championship. Obviously that for us it must have meaning and, therefore, We study it carefully. I wouldn’t rule it out“.

BMW has identified a clear route time to jump to MotoGP and 2027 is underlined in red, because this is the year when the new regulations will be implemented. So far it has not been decided although Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna, recalled in an interview with ‘Mundo Deportivo’ that “our proposal is out there devices front and rear and very tight aerodynamics, tighter than what the MSMA (Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers’ Association) asked us to do. And, for the displacement, enough, down to 850cc – currently 1,000cc -“.

Marc Bongers, director of BMW Motorsport, admitted in statements to ‘Motorsport’ that “it is a fact that many circuits are no longer designed for the speeds achieved. I’m not just talking about top speed, but also cornering speed. That’s the main reason for the new regulations. The goal is for the motorcycles to be slower. “It makes sense to reduce displacement and, in all likelihood, remove devices at height.”

Bongers added BMW has not expressed any requests for new regulation: “It is not possible. In the past, some manufacturers would give their opinion on a new regulation and then back out (…) you can participate in MSMA meetings if you make a public declaration of intent. You can attend, but in that case you do not have the right to vote. “Only if you actively participate in the category do you have the right to vote.”
