After learning this week that Garazi Murua will be hanging up his boots at the end of the season, we also learned yesterday that Yulema Corres will be doing the same. Athletic’s sixth leading scorer (67 goals) ended a decade as a lioness with 203 games under her belt and retired from professional football. Two great figures from Athletic whose departure makes the generational change at the club even more evident.
If a few years ago it was Erika Vázquez, Vanesa Gimbert and more recently Nekane Díez, today it is Garazi and Yulema who say goodbye and leave that generation of footballers who achieved so much success. A new phase is opening for the new generations who in recent years burst into the first team with force and want to bring back Athletic’s best years. Passing the baton of those who fought to be seen and now make way for others who, despite traveling the easier path, still have things to achieve.
A generational change of which we are witnesses and which generates nostalgia and excitement in equal parts. Those who used to be references for those of us who dream of playing football are gone, and those who, even if they don’t know it, are references for all the girls and boys who now see their dream closer . Past, present and future. And Athletic is always in good hands.
