This Friday in Vitoria-Gasteiz, just over a month since the end of Itzulia, the 3rd edition of Itzulia Women. The day promised, a peloton with great cycling stars and 3 days of cycling ahead. The stage, the longest of this edition with 140km, starts between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Elgoibar.
The stage began calmly, with several attempts to escape, but without success. The peloton did not want a breakaway with many runners to better control the race. With 90 kilometers to go, Célia Le Mouel (AUB, 95), Quinty Van De Guchte (LDL, 105), Maaike Colje (ARK, 162) and Nina Berton (WNT, 193) tried but without success.
With 55 kilometers remaining, Valentina Cavallar (ARK, 165) and Stine Dale (HPU, 121) achieved a distance of 55 seconds with the peloton. In an up and down section the peloton broke, leaving some favorites in the back group. Finally, they reunite without consequence. This cut the gap to 17 seconds on the two breakaways, but the peloton again gave up a few seconds on the race lead. At the start of the last mountain pass, Itziar, the difference was 47 seconds.
When Itziar was about to be crowned, Demi Vollering He picked up the pace and lined up the group in single file. The breakaway lost ground and Valentina Cavallar was left leading the stage alone.
On the descent to Deba the peloton neutralized the breakaway, after the descent was the stage’s second intermediate sprint with bonuses. Movistar worked to get the bonuses to Olivia Baril (71, MOV).
The race came very quickly to the finish line and after a few heart-stopping last meters it was all decided on the sprint. The Team SD Worx-Protime rider, Mischa Bredewold (SDW, 6) was ahead of her teammate Demi Vollering and Arlenis Sierra (75, MOV) on the stage.
