The American Xander Schauffele was at his best Thursday on the opening day of the PGA Championship and he leads with a -9, with Jon Rahm eight shots back, but stuck to his options after recovering from four bogeys in the first six holes to sign -1.
At Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky (USA), Schauffele got off to an uneventful start and his card of 62 strokes equals the record of this ‘great’.
The American made nine birdies without a single error and became the first golfer capable of scoring more than a round of 62 in a major.
Behind him is the American Tony Finay (-6)star of the best start of his career in a ‘big one’, tied with his compatriot Sahith Theegala.
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy started the second nine holes and finished with a round of 66five under par, something he did in the opening round of the 2014 PGA Championship, when he became the champion.
