The young man Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard completed a dream day by winning the first title of his careerin his hometown, in Lyon, which he took from Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry, sixth seed, whom he defeated in the final 6-4, 1-6 and 7-6 (7).
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who until this event had only played in the main draw of three tournaments on the ATP circuit, in Hertogenbosch and Roland Garros, losing in the first round, and Antwerp, where he reached the quarterfinals, all in 2023, took advantage of the maximum invitation given by the organization of the tournament.
The promising French tennis player kept his cool as Etcheverry tried to react. The player from La Plata, 29th in the ATP ranking, is not done with his record debut. He played in Lyon in the third final of his career, the first in 2024, after Houston and Santiago in 2023. He lost them all.
Etcheverry managed to win. He had a match point in the third set tiebreaker, but Mpetshi Perricard maintained his style, and for the third time he closed out the victory after two and a half hours of play.
