Wimbledon to hand out record prize money

Date:

Wimbledon (June 27-July 10) will regain all its capacity after the cancellation of 2020 and the partial public entry in 2021, although it will be another unique edition because the All England Club vetoed the involvement of Russian and Belarusian tennis players as a measure against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Both the ATP as the WTAgoverning the men’s and women’s circuits, respectively, responded to this proposal made unilaterally by the London tournament organization by removing the world ranking points awarded by its Grand Slam on grass.

Despite this condition, which is relevant for players, Wimbledon has announced a record prize money, despite consideration of the possibility of cutting it due to the lack of distribution of ATP and WTA points.

The total jackpot is £ 40,350,000, more than 50 million euros. The men’s and women’s singles champion will pocket two million pounds each, more than two and a half euros.

According to the official Wimbledon statement, the increase is 5.4% compared to the 2019 edition, the one before the pandemic. This percentage rises to 11.1% taking 2021 as a reference, with no option to fill the stands.

In addition, the AELTC (All England Lawn Tennis Club) won another day at the box office from 2022, as it lost the historic weekly break on the first Sunday of competition.

Wimbledon emphasizes the trend of boosting the earnings of tennis players who must go through the qualification stage or have more options to not get out in the first rounds. In this sense, which has been the center of the crisis at Covid, indicates an increase of 4.2% for past tennis players, strengthening those at 48.1 in 2019 and 26 in 2021. Those eliminated in the opening round of the table major They leave with 50,000 pounds, more than 60,000 euros.
