Kaiser names numbers – hacker attack: 250 gigabytes of data stolen

Date:

The hacker attack on the Carinthian state administration on Thursday also occupied the Carinthian state parliament. Accordingly, “at least 250 gigabytes of data” were allegedly stolen, including 120 passport details. 95 percent of the data would come from state officials or political representatives.

Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) confirmed this when answering an emergency request. Four-fifths should be data from state government members. It is assumed that the hackers mainly extracted data from government politicians and “from the framework of foreign affairs”: “When comparing the data with the list of hackers, a data volume of at least 250 GB can be assumed,” says Kaiser.

183 gigabytes (77.54 percent of data) of the data retrieved would relate to the governor’s office. Another 5.75% comes from other members of the government. According to the initial surveys, 120 copies of passports were also affected and people would be “immediately notified”.

Data from most government officials affected
“More than four-fifths of the data extracted relate to members of the government.” Passport data that emerged was “primarily from government employees, government employees and individual family members,” explains Kaiser. “That has to do with the fact that they work internationally – for example in different EU bodies – or hold positions there.”

Access the “Fileshare” section
Analyzes of the published data had indicated that the hackers likely had access to the “fileshare” area: “According to the analysis to date, there is no technical evidence of a breach of closed systems.” Access to bank accounts would be barred by special encryption – as well as the assumption that the hackers had access to vaccination waiver requests: “The platform resides on a remote server, which has not been affected by the hacker attack.”

40,000 overload requests
Like the days before, there were also failed attacks on the IT system on Wednesday, Kaiser citing 40,000 overload requests. The FPÖ has prepared an emergency request with 45 questions for the governor before the meeting.

“Unfortunately not an isolated case”
Kaiser explained that the attack on the state of Carinthia was “unfortunately not an isolated case”, even the Pentagon, the US Department of Defense, was not protected from hacker attacks. Kaiser declined to go into detail about the actual subject matter of the request, which measures the country had taken against cyber attacks.

In general, he mentioned “processes and guidelines, awareness training, infrastructure measures and other measures and risk minimization”.
