Thirty years of the European Championship Denmark won without qualifying

Date:

This Friday marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the European Championship in Sweden 1992, the last major tournament missed by the Spanish team men’s soccer. Since then, the Red has participated in all major events. That Eurocopa was that in the act of Denmark, which was declared, against all likelihood, champion of a tournament in which it had not yet qualified, but came as a guest after UN sanctions on Serbia, which were not included.

Football history happened at Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg on June 26, 1992, when Denmark became European champions after beating Germany 2-0. In the semi-finals, the Scandinavians eliminated defending champion Netherlands from penalties.

UEFA called on Denmark at the last minute to participate in that European Championship as a result of the exclusion of Yugoslavia then after UN measures for the Balkan war. From the holidays, Danish players continued to play the tournament and were declared champions under the command of Richard Möller Nielsen.

Without Michael Laudrup

Ex-Barcelonista and ex-Madridista Michael Laudrup did not share in that victory, one of the most famous players in Danish history, but briefly retired from the national team in 1990, due to differences with Möller Nielsen, like his brothers Bryan and Jan Molby. Michael Laudrup returned to his country’s national team in 1993, to retire permanently in 1998.

The so -called ‘red dynamite’ succeeded in Sweden. They reached the semifinals as second in group 1 (behind the host, the Swedish team) and beat France on the last day of said first round (1-2). Then came the victory on penalties against the Dutch (4-5 after 2-2) and the 2-0 victory in the final against Germany. A legendary ‘oranje’ team, including Marco van Basten (who missed his penalty in the shootout), Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit, were eliminated by Denmark.

John Jensen and Kim Vilfort were the great Danish heroes in the final against mighty Germany as they scored the same goal. A year ago, Denmark managed to reach the semifinals of the European Championship, playing for Christian Eriksen, who suffered cardiac arrest on June 12, in the match against Finland, but, thanks to his teammates and doctor, he got ahead and continued his career.
