Fernando Alonso will start this Sunday in 6th position on the starting grid of the Canadian F1 GP after a very complicated classification due to the changing track conditions and the few drops of rain that threaten again and again. The Asturian reckons his sixth place is good for this Sunday, but regrets not fighting for pole by just two tenths on a day where no one could set a perfect lap. And in his remarks after ‘DAZN’, he remembered Ferrari and the optimism that the team has, and that can also be seen in the press, in relation to the red team’s options to fight for everything. Verstappen and McLaren in Canada and in general the World Cup after Leclerc’s victory in Monaco.
“Well, we are in front of good people… of Pérez, in front of two Ferraris, who suddenly came to win the World Cup after Monaco, and all these things,” said the Asturian with a mischievous smile after a few days in which the red car was considered the favorite in Canada and where even within the Italian team they found themselves equal to their rivals in the fight for the championship.
Perhaps the words were not directed at Ferrari and more at the press that already put those in red in the bag of favorites in all Grand Prix. Or perhaps, a way to highlight that not everything is what it seems in a close F1 and how many things can vary from one day to the next. As in the case of Aston Martin, a team in which Alonso reiterated his confidence and made it clear on Thursday that it could reappear. “There are a couple of black or white answers and last year was a bit grayer. We are only in race 9 of 24 of this course and I think this year we will finish in a very strong position. That is what what I want to believe now,” he said at that time. Question of interpretations.
Ferrari has high expectations in Canada
Frédéric Vasseur, head of the Ferrari team, preferred to be cautious after the victory in Monegasque. Meanwhile, Leclerc hopes after the Monaco GP that his team should reach the level of Red Bull and McLaren: “I think the improvements we brought to Imola, we still have to see how well they work and where they will take us. And then it’s about maximizing every weekend, and then, hopefully, little by little, we’ll get there.”. But what happened in Canada may raise doubts and we will have to see if it is a track specific thing or if Ferrari has a longer way to catch its rivals than everyone believes.
Of course, everyone agreed that the Canadian track should be good for SF24. Nope.
Very close to Red Bull in Constructores
Ferrari arrived in Canada with Leclerc just 31 points behind Verstappen, with Sainz fourth on 61 (with one race inferior to the others) and Just 24 points behind Red Bull’s lead in the Constructors’ World Championship.
