Dorival Junior, new Flamengo coach

The flamingo of Rio de Janeiro named Brazilian Dorival Junior as his new head coach to be replaced Paul Sousa as they seek to recover from a bad start to the season.

Sousa, who joined Flamengo in December last year, left the club earlier this week following consecutive league defeats against Bragantino and Fortaleza, leaving them 14th in Brazil’s top tier after 10 against.

In a statement on Friday, the club said the 60-year-old Dorival has signed a contract that will last until December 2022. This will be Dorival’s third spell at the club, which coached them in 2012 and 2018. .

His first coaching job was at Ferroviaria in 2002, then he coached several teams in Brazil. Dorival manages one of the largest and most successful clubs in Brazil, albeit one that is constantly evolving. He will be Flamengo’s fifth coach in two years.

Catalan Domènec Torrent, Rogerio Ceni, Renato Gaucho and Sousa have taken the lead since Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus left in July 2020, but all left after a short time, struck by the long shadow of the successful Jesus and the requests a large fan base.
