There has been speculation about the possibility for weeks and now it’s official. Alpine has made the return of the Flavio Briatore in Formula 1 as executive advisor to the Enstone team. Luca de MeoCEO of the Renault group, is responsible for his appointment.
As the statement indicates, it will mainly focus on the areas of strategic team expertise, including key talent acquisition and market drivers. He will propose evolutions in the current project structure and advise on all strategic matters related to this discipline.
Briatore has been in the French structure since Benetton’s time, where he was champion Michael Schumacher. Furthermore, in Spain he is also remembered for being Renault’s leader during Fernando Alonso’s golden era in the 2005 and 2006 championships.
His farewell was highly publicized as it was the aftermath of the controversial ‘Crashgate’ in Singapore, where Nelson Piquet Jr allegedly crashed deliberately to favor Alonso’s victory in 2008. As a result, the FIA decided to disqualify Briatore after a long and high profile test.
