Xherdan ShaqiriSwitzerland midfielder, assured this Saturday, after his team’s elimination in the quarterfinals of the Euro Cup after losing to England, that “there is nothing crueler than being eliminated on penalties.”

He Chicago Fire midfielder, one of the emblems of the ‘Golden Generation’ of the Swiss team, analyzed the defeat of Switzerland, who for the second time in a row in a European Championship left the competition in the quarterfinals and from eleven meters (in the last edition, the executioner was Spain).

“I think there is nothing more cruel than being eliminated from penalties. We fought and gave everything for the fairy tale to continue. I’m proud of the team and I think we did a lot to be proud and happy. That has always been our biggest goal. In football, the normal thing is that a team gets eliminated in the penalty shootout and English are the best team in this sense right now,” he said.

Shaqiri says Switzerland are “on the verge of qualifying” and he regretted that the English team reacted at the end to win the tie on penalties after drawing 1-1 after 120 minutes of play.

“I think people will remember that we played a good tournament. This could also be seen on social media, how people were celebrating, which encouraged us. This euphoria stimulated us and we cannot be blamed. We are all very proud of the performance and we can take advantage of it for the next tournament,” he said.
