“We have a lot of work to do, so let’s get to work,” said the new British Prime Minister David Lammy at the first meeting of his government. The first blow has already been struck: the Conservative deportation project to Rwanda has been halted. Now London also wants a fresh start in relations with the EU.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy explained on Saturday in Germany, the first official trip as the new incumbent president: “This new government in the United Kingdom has made its priorities very clear. We want a reset – a ‘reset’ – of our relationship with Europe.” The new Labour government wants a reshuffle of Britain’s policy on climate change – and a reset with the world’s emerging powers.
“These are all issues where Germany has played a leading role and that means that there can be an important partnership between Britain and Germany,” the Labour politician stressed. That is why he visited Berlin immediately after his appointment. Lammy met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
But no return to the EU
Lammy stressed that the Labour government also had no intention of rejoining the EU. “We will not rejoin the single market or the customs union, but there is much we can do together,” he made clear. The new British government wants to put the Brexit years behind it.
Such a pact could cover issues such as defence, energy and climate and could be very broad. He also announced a review of trade relations between the Kingdom and the EU.
