Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick Step), sixth overall, 7.17 minutes behind yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar, admitted that both the Slovenian rider and the Danish Jonas Vingegaard were “superior to Evenepoel in the mountains”but noted that they will try to stay ahead to “win at some stage.”
“This is the first pure mountain stage and it is probably better than other seasons. I don’t think the differences in the general classification are definitive, last year Vingegaard beat Pogacar by 7 minutes in two stages. Both are superior to Evenepoel in the mountains, but we have to try to stay ahead to win a stage,” said cyclist Alava at the finish line.
With just over a week left in the Tour de France, Landa is still hoping for a chance to win a stage.
“The UAE wanted to control the race to win the stage and we tried to lose as much as possible. We’ll have to try it one day, hopefully with some margin. I’m more than 7th overall and let’s see if there’s an option,” he concluded.
