Dating world boxing champion Carlos Ortiz, one of the best Puerto Rican boxers, died Monday at the age of 85 in New York, as confirmed by the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
“The WBO family is mourning the passing of legendary lightweight champion and Junior Welter Carlos Ortiz.“, the organization said in a message on its official Twitter account.
The WBO confirmed that Ortiz was “one of the best and most popular fighters of the sixties”.
Born in Ponce, southern Puerto Rico, and raised in New York, the boxer has not recovered from a stroke suffered a few months ago.
Ortiz won his first world crown in 1959, in the so -called junior welterweight division, and his second in the lightweight category in 1962.
In addition, he was inducted in 1991 into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
He is considered one of the five best Puerto Rican boxers of all time.with Wilfredo Gómez, Félix ‘Tito’ Trinidad, Wilfredo Benítez and Miguel Cotto.
