The former Spanish midfielder Juan MataWorld Cup winner, will join the Western Sydney Wanderers of Australia for the upcoming A-League season, the former Asian champion said on Thursday. The versatile 36-year-old, whose glittering club career included spells at Valencia, Chelsea and Manchester United, moved to Wanderers after leaving Japanese side Vissel Kobe in January.
“I’m excited to join Western Sydney Wanderers… and can’t wait to come and train with the team to prepare for next season,” Mata said in a club statement. “I am grateful and excited for this new adventure and look forward to trying to win another championship in another league.”
The Wanderers are the only Australian club to have won the Asian Champions League, something they achieved in 2014, just two years after they were founded as an expansion team. Their biggest city rivals, Sydney FC, announced last week the signing of former Brazilian winger Douglas Costa on a two-year deal. The 2024-25 A-League season begins in mid-October.
