The group of USA This Friday dominated the first day of Solheim Cup 2024 against Europe and achieved a 6-2 advantage after contested ‘foursomes’ (alternating shots) and ‘fourball’ (best ball) matches.
The Robert Trent Jones club of Gainesville (Virginia) hosts a new edition of the Solheim Cup after the success of the European team achieved last year at Finca Cortesín (Málaga, Spain).
And the United States got off to the best start, winning three of four foursome matches and three of four fourball matches.
The day started with alternating shots, where the Spanish Carlota Ciganda competed with the Swedish Linn Grant. The European couple lost three up and two holes to play (3 and 2) against Lilia Vu and Sarah Schmelzel.
Other points for the American team were obtained by Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz against German Esther Henseleit and British Charley Hull (3 and 2), and Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin against the pair formed by French Celine Boutier and Swiss Albane Valenzuela (3 and 2).
The only success in this format for Europe was the signature of the Dane Emily Pedersen and the Swede Maja Stark against Ally Ewing and Jennifer Kupcho (2 up).
The afternoon is marked by a ‘fourball’ star, for best ball, where each player in the pair plays his own ball and only the best result between the two on each hole is taken into account.
The United States took three of these four matches. Nelly Korda and Megan Khang defeated the British Georga Hall and the Irish Leona Maguire (6 and 4); Lauren Coughlin and Sarah Schmelzer were victorious over Emily Pedersen and Maja Stark (3 and 2) and Andrea Lee and Rose Zhang finished with a victory over Linn Grant and Charley Hull (5 and 4).
Swedes Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom gave the European team the only point when they defeated Alison Lee and Lexi Thompson 6 and 5.
The Solheim Cup 2024 will run until Sunday, when 12 individual matches will be played.
