Hervé Renard left the French women’s soccer team after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Olympics including Brazil. In an interview granted to ‘LÉquipe’, The 56-year-old coach explained his experience training women.
“I had to change my personality a little bit, yes. Maybe I became less tough. I didn’t achieve the goal, maybe I have to be different. I haven’t been myself all the time. Now there’s no point in regretting it’s too late, but at some point you have to be yourself,” he said.
When asked if he misses them, he assured that “yes, but not all. Like many of them I’m not surprised, that’s normal. The person I will follow the most is Laurent Bonadei. But from afar. I didn’t even see his press conference and I won’t. I’m afraid they’ll ruin it. Not because of him, but because of the questions.”
Performance review on Olympicssaid that “I set goals similar to those given by the Federation and I did not achieve them. I take my responsibilities. . Then I wonder how we can lose a game like that, against Brazil. This is incomprehensible. We have everything in this game to make a difference. When I saw what the Brazilians did… I’m sure they were very scared of us, and rightly so, because we dominated them in everything. And even if they used a method… I think we should be more protected, but that’s no excuse. “When we’re in front of the goal we have a chance to score, so it’s not the opponent’s fault.”
And he added that “I read several statements where the mental aspect was mentioned. This was the first reason I gave. We are too mentally weak. I have not been able to change it. However, deep down I am convinced , and I tell you this truly, that I can change it. It doesn’t matter much, but the one who goes home is the one who makes the mistake.”
Finally, regarding his future, he commented that “my priority is a national team. I have an offer from Nigeria. But I’m not Guardiola, Zidane, Ancelotti or Klopp; I don’t do what I want and when I want. “I will not take a sabbatical.”
