The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) imposed a fine of 200,000 dollars (181,300 euros) on Angel City FC and docked the team three points in the 2024 regular-season standings after an investigation into violations of salary cap rules.
The league also suspended Angel City President and CEO Julie Uhrman and General Manager Angel Hucles Mangano for “performing duties related to player transactions” for the remainder of the calendar year.
The Los Angeles-based club was out of the playoff picture entering the final month of the season, but a penalty dropped Angel City (6-12-4) from 22 points to 19 points, leaving them in 12th place in the classification. The League has 14 teams and is nine points away from the eighth and final playoff spot.
In a press release, the NWSL said its investigation revealed that Angel City entered into five side deals with players that paid them outside of their contracts and were not disclosed to the league.
“Due to these undisclosed benefits, ACFC exceeded the salary cap by approximately $50,000 for four weeks during the 2024 season,” the league’s statement said. The players who received additional compensation were not disclosed.
