Manchester City has accused the Premier League of misleading other clubs about the resolution, announced on Monday, in the case concerning the regulations for associated companies (APT).
Both the Premier League and City declared themselves winners of the lawsuit, which the club emphasized in the two transactions of Etihad and the Abu Dhabi bank blocked by the Premier unfair and in breach of UK competition law. On the other hand, the body that governs the English championship ensures that “the majority of City’s accusations” have been dismissed.
City attorneys talk about “mistake”
One of the City attorneys, Simon Cliff, sent an email to 19 Premier clubs informing them of a number of “inaccuracies” in the summary presented by the Premier himself.
“Unfortunately, the summary is incorrect and contains many inaccuracies. One of the most important is that the Premier suggests that the new APT rules will be approved in the next ten days. When the Premier asked us about the original APT rules, we said “The process was rushed and ill-conceived and therefore resulted in anti-competitive rules. The verdict vindicated those concerns,” Cliff said in the email, to which Sky Sports has access.
According to City, the Premier is right that not all the club’s demands have been met, but that “it is not necessary to prove that the APT’s rules are unfair” because the court has already settled, which consists of three judges .
When to reform regulations, a cause of contention
The Premier’s goal is to renew the rules as soon as possible, while the City advocate does not speed up the process because it could lead to more legal problems.
These sponsorship rules from related companies came in 2021 due to concerns thate Newcastle United, bought by Saudi Arabia, can have financial doping by increasing its sponsorships with companies from the same country.
The City decided to denounce these policies this year, after the Premier delayed the approval of two agreements with the company Etihad and the bank of Saudi Arabia.
