Midfielder Miguel Terceros was the author of the goal Bolivia that, with a man less, beat Colombia and removed his undefeated status at over 4,000 meters high at the El Alto Municipal Stadium. This result represented the third consecutive victory for Green and temporarily moved up to fifth position in the South American qualifiers. World Cup 2026.
Terceros’ goal came in the 58th minute, after a quick counterattack in which they beat two opposing players. The first minutes belonged entirely to Bolivia, which advanced its lines and boxed Colombia into its field. Green’s main weapon is the mid-distance shots of Robson Matheus, Ramiro Vaca and Terceros, who also became the axis of the team led by Óscar Villegas. That approach backfired with an inspired Vargas drowning shots from the Bolivians destined for the net.
Bolivia’s script fell apart in the 19th minute when Brazilian judge Wilton Sampaio showed Bolivian Héctor Cuéllar a straight red card for a foul on Róger Martínez, who was facing goal. The Colombian striker had to leave the field due to injury and was replaced by Jhon Córdova. Colombia moved forward in their ranks and played the sides behind the Bolivian defenders, but Córdova was not good at judging. Bolivia did not relent in attack despite Jeyson Chura being sent off and out due to injury. Late in the first half Robson again finished from distance, but Vargas, already a figurehead, was able to stop the Bolivian’s possession.
In the second half, Colombia took the reins and the timing of the game to gain volume of play against a Bolivian team that struggled to react. However, Terceros was surprised by a solo play after a lateral and after a dribble that left two Colombian players in the way, he put the ball in Vargas’ corner.
After the goal, coach Villegas adjusted his scheme as he sent Luis Paz to the field to replace the goal scorer to set up a line of five players at the back and play on the counterattack. Colombia put La Verde on the ropes with James Rodríguez leading the play, but those attacks were met by an applied defense and Bolivian goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra.
The next day, on October 15, Bolivia will visit Argentina and Colombia will host Chile.
