Rio Takeda added her first victory on the LPGA Tour this Sunday after winning the Toto Japan Classic in a playoff that lasted six holes in which she defeated the American Marina Alex.
The Japanese birdied the 18th holepar 5, beat Alex by par. The two were tied after 54 holes at -15.
The tournament was limited to 54 regulation holes after rain canceled Saturday’s third round. They were also tied after the first five playoff holes in the sudden-death format, each with a birdie on the first playoff hole and pars on the next four.
All playoff holes are par 5: the 18th and the 13th shot a 6-under 66 in the final round and Takeda 67. South Korean Haeran Ryu is one stroke behind after of the regulation round, with a 66. He finished at 14-under 202.
Japan’s Hana Wakimoto, leader after the first two rounds, carded a 1-over 73 and finished three shots behind the leaders. She is also looking for her first victory on the LPGA Tour.
The tournament in Japan concludes a four-event LPGA Tour Asian swing that includes tests in China, South Korea and Malaysia.
