Jorge Sampaoli The former coach of Chile and Argentina and former coach of Seville, Flamengo and Marseille, among others, today justified his return to Ligue 1 as coach of Rennes because “there is raw material, because the best (players) in the world came from France and Brazil”. Surprisingly, he did not mention his country, Argentina.
“I admire Ligue 1. I have continued to watch it since I left Marseille (2001-2022). I like how the teams work, their transitions. The French championship is constantly improving and, more here, the best in the world are from France and Brazil, there is raw material,” Sampaoli, who also coached Santos and Atlético Mineiro in Brazil, said in his presentation.
Sampaoli, 64 years old, signed for one and a half seasons, until the end of June 2026, with Rennes, a club in the upper-middle zone of the table owned by luxury magnate François Pinault which this year is not playing in Europe and that is currently thirteenth in a championship of 18 teams.
The Argentine coach, admirer of his compatriot Marcelo Bielsa He was asked about why he takes so little time to manage the teams he coaches. It does not last two seasons and the only exception is the Chilean team, which he coached for four years, between 2012 and 2016.
“My level of demand is often too high compared to the demands of the clubs where I have worked. But I know that these ambitions are disproportionate and perhaps unattainable. This is something that I have to change. I have to improve that aspect if I want to spend more time in Rennes,” concluded Sampaoli.
