The FIFA is learning to incorporate the new Soccer Video Support (FVS) to replace VAR. This new system is characterized by being a more simplified alternative that increases the participation of coaches when analyzing plays.
This new tool allows technicians of each team to request images twice every fight. If they just don’t pass the test, they lose the claim. At the time of the request, the referee is obliged to review the game and, on other occasions, cannot decide for himself to consult the images.
The FVS it is a simpler system on a technical level; Four or five cameras are needed and there is no video referee. The simplicity of this system is provided by its use in minor competitions, with few human and financial resources. The only human management there is the mobilization of a technician who calibrates the images so that the general referee can review them.
This new alternative has been tested on Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup and on World Cups feminine U20 and U17 where the coaches were satisfied with the result. The president of the FIFA referees committee, Pierluigi Collina, also approved the introduction of FVS: “We are just at the beginning of the trial. (…) So far we have not noticed anything unexpected”Pierluigi commented. The president also spoke about reducing the referee’s responsibility and giving it to the coaches: “Giving the referee a chance to start a review means putting extra pressure on him (…) Because of this, “Coaches are responsible for the decision to request a review.”, Collina highlighted.
As soon as possible, FIFA expects to receive permission from International Football Association Board (IFAB) to extend it to other competitions. If approved, the alternative would be implemented next year.
