De Marcos, more than six years later, returned to play in a continental competition defending the Athletic shirt. The captain of the red and white team is clear that the return to Europe motivates both Valverde’s team and his loyal fans.
What does it mean to you to compete in Europe again?
It creates a lot of excitement in the locker room because a lot of players have never experienced it before and apart from being players, they are Athletic fans. By being able to live it, everything is stirred again. We all want to go back to those magical nights. The week changes you, obviously, and the games are different.
Why are they different?
I enjoyed them more. As in the League you are always responsible for being regular, in Europe they must be enjoyed responsibly. The atmosphere created is a joy.
So far this season, the team is playing better and scoring less than it should in the League and in Europe, on the contrary, worse football and better results.
I agree. In the League, to be fair, from a football point of view we could have more points and less in Europe. That’s football.
