Fernando Alonso, critical of the F1 sprint format, proposes this important change

Date:

Fernando Alonso started 11th in the F1 Qatar GP sprint race and finished in the same positionand after that, in statements to ‘DAZN F1’is critical of a format that, according to him, only works in specific circuits such as Brazilian F1 GP.

The man from Oviedo considers that if a sprint classification format is implemented similar to the normal ‘qualy’ format, making the sprint races a pure repetition of what the spectators will see in the next day in the first round of the race. .

The man from Oviedo proposes clear changes to encourage that the order of the sprint race grid can be different and the worst team can have more chances to surprise. For Alonso, Friday’s short qualifying should be one lap, with the worst car starting at the end to take advantage of better track conditions. Another idea he repeated was to do an inverted grid for the short race on Saturday. as is the case in lower categories such as Formula 2.

“It’s difficult to overtake. But more than the circuit itself, the criticism is the sprint format of F1. AndWe’ve said it many times: if you do a time trial with the same format Q1, Q2 and Q3… the best will always finish in the top 10 and then in the race, it doesn’t matter if it’s 50 laps or 21. Or you change the format of the grill, whether it’s an inverted grill or somethingwhich i think is something against teams… or do you do a more interesting one-lap time trial format, where anything can happen, because there is an evolution on the track and the teams behind might have a chance if they come off the track late…”he revealed to ‘DAZN’.

“I don’t know, we have to give a twist to the format, because if we don’t see it on Saturday, what will happen in the first round of the race on Sunday will happen again,” he added.

“It happened to us quite a bit at all the circuits. Only Brazil makes the sprints a bit more interesting, but also because there is a lot of degradation, or when it rains,” added the Aston Martin driver.

“We did 19 laps and my fastest lap was the last one, so tomorrow (Sunday) will be a pretty easy one-stop race for everyone. Just like today, but it’s 40 minutes and tomorrow people should get food because it’s an hour and a half.”he finished.
