Edgar Canet Only 20 days until the dream of his life comes true: the release of rally in Dakarthe hardest rally-raid in the world. And the challenge for the rider from La Garriga (Catalunya) is double because, in his first year in the motorcycle category, He will be the youngest participant of the entire caravan at only 19 years old.
Despite being young, “age is just a number” as he himself said in the presentation of his project together KTMwhich took place this Wednesday at This Motorpark of Castellolí. Wanting to impress the world is great, but right now it’s all about getting to the big event in the best possible way.
“Right now there are not too many nerves. I know that they will gradually increase. I am motivated to train as much as possible and arrive as prepared in these last 20 days,” he confessed to MD during the presentation.
“I run, go to the gym, swim, ride a bike… Now I don’t ride motorcycles as much, so far I’ve done a lot of motocross, a lot of rallies. Now is the time not to cycle too much to avoid taking risks. “There are only a few days left and it’s more important that you work on your physique.”
Goals in his rookie year
Edgar is just a debutant but he has many eyes on him and it’s no wonder. He only focused on rally-raid for a year after a lifetime in motocross. However, this change gives unusual results. For example, in Baja Aragón he was second overall and in the Morocco Rally, the litmus test for the Dakar, he was second in his category and sixth overall. With these outstanding results, his debut will be one of the most followed in Saudi Arabia. In any case, he insists that in this first edition it is time to learn.
“This is my first Dakar and the goal is nothing but to finish and learn in the race. See how the days passed and learn something from it to be prepared for the future. It is true that the good result in Morocco helps me to know where we are. “It went well and now it’s time to finish all the details that were not finished in Morocco.”
“Until now I’ve been racing motocross and last year when I turned 18, I got my driver’s license and said ‘Now that I have my driving licence, I want to run a race in Africa and this is the first step. I decided to do a rally-raid race in Morocco and when I came back I decided. “I came home and said I want to make my sports career in rally-raids and we are about to fulfill the dream of doing the Dakar.”
To finish his first Dakar, Edgar was taken care of by the best drivers and legends of the toughest rally in the world. The one who supported him the most was Nani Roma but many other two-wheeled figures also gave him some advice.
“Many pilots helped me, especially Nani Roma, who helped as much as possible. Also Jordi Viladoms or Marc Coma and of course Joan Barreda. They gave me a lot of advice and I listened to them all. “We worked with all the recommendations they gave me to arrive at the best way.”
“Idols? I have many but I would tell you Nani. He won cars and motorcycles and this is something that few can be proud of. So he is an example to follow.”
Nani Roma, idol and mentor
During the presentation of Castellolí, Nani Roma did not want to miss Edgar’s action. Canet idolized Nani and was fortunate to rely on his advice since he was just 7 and 8 years old. With the current Ford driver, Edgar learned a lot in motocross and when he mentioned the possibility of switching to rally-raid, Nani was surprised.
“It’s not a natural change. An 18-year-old enduro rider who had never done a raid, who had no idea what it was like to go down a road, we advised him not to do it because we knew the danger. what will happen, Later, with his insistence and his attitude, we helped him choose the people around him because it was a very complicated path to do alone.. He has shown that he has the desire and attitude to do it,” Nani also confided to us.
“Technically it is very good because it comes from motocross. Every driver who has done well there with victories and podiums has a very high technical level. You combine him with youth and the best thing he has is his attitude. “With attitude and talent, it’s amazing.”
“I think he has qualities but he needs to go slowly. You journalists, you need to help him too. Sometimes the way the question is framed gets in the way.challenge him in different ways and give him more pressure than he deserves. Together we have to accompany him on this path, which is not easy and the effort to fight for the Dakar is long and we must take the relevant steps.“, he declared in conclusion.
