New record for Felipe Orts after winning his seventh consecutive Spanish Championship

Date:

Alicante Felipe Orts (Ridley Racing Team) met the predictions and achieved a new record after winning the Spanish Championship cyclocross, all from 2019, while Sofia Rodríguez ended the favoritism of Lucia Gonzalez (Nesta MMR Cycling Team) and was crowned champion for the first time by being the strongest on the muddy course designed in As Pontes (A Coruña).

Orts, who this year achieved historic podiums in World Cup eventsdid not give its rivals the slightest option on a route that forced participants to put their feet in the mud and their bikes on their shoulders.

Villajoyosa’s runner overcame remarkable clarity from the start Jofre Cullell (BH Coloma Team), which reached 1:25, and Mario Junquera (Fed. Asturias), who closed the podium in 2:55, while the fourth place went to David Ovine (Sellon Bici Center), fourth in at least 6:12.

“It was a very complicated race, I always say that the Spanish Championship is a race with a lot of pressure, but it’s true that I felt very good, I had a margin and I ran the way I wanted, at my speed, when nobody failed and we have a seventh straight elite title, so it couldn’t be happier,” said Orts after his new national title.

Previously, in the women’s event, Sofia Rodríguez won the mud battle Lucia Gonzalez and Sara Cuetowhere he distanced himself on the second lap exactly in a section where it was impossible to ride a bike and he had to ride on his shoulder.

At that moment, he opened an impossible gap for Cueto, while Lucía González was still left, a victim of the hardness of the course. Rodríguez didn’t back down one bit and went for the victory unapologetically.

The Nesta MMR Cycling Team rider won with a time of 42:50, 49 seconds ahead of his teammate and a priori favorite Lucía González, who reacted in the last lap and passed Sara Cueto (F. Asturias), third in 1:10 , while Alicia González (Nesta MMR) was fourth in 2:02.

“I am very happy. The circumstances on the circuit are very difficult but I know how to manage my energy very well to reach the end with the little gas needed to achieve victory,” commented Sofía Rodríguez.

In the under-23 category, the champion was Marta Beti (F. Cántabra) ahead of Marta Cano (F. Catalaña) and Claudia San Justo (F. Cántabra).
