Former tennis player and captain of the Spanish women’s team Anabel Medina (Torrent, Valencia, 1982) explained in an interview with EFE that this summer will be very special, as her first child, Lucas, will be born at the end of July.which will change the dynamics of the holiday season since he lowered the racket.
He then left a great list of winners after twenty-one years as a professional, where he won 39 WTA titles (eleven in singles and twenty-eight in doubles) , in addition to two Roland Garros and an Olympic silver medal in doubles. with Viví Ruano.
The baby was born on July 29, close to Anabel’s birthday. At first they told her that it could coincide with her (31st) and then it could be on another date, albeit soon.
Question: A strange summer awaits you, right?
Answer: Yes, life changes all around. The birth of a child is always very good news but at the same time it implies a huge responsibility, but I am very happy. Every man and woman has stages in their lives and now I face a different stage.
Q: Before birth, any previous escapades?
A: Despite the pregnancy, it didn’t quite stop. My gynecologist told me that as long as I was feeling well I should live normally, and I did, but since I wanted her to be born in Valencia, she recommended that I be here at the end of June because it could be presented. After the tournament in Valencia I went to Mallorca to disconnect for a few days and then I came back to wait for Lucas.
Q: And the rest of the summer is already here for him?
A: Yes, we are going here to meet him with Antonio’s family (with him) and my family and when I am discharged and the baby has traveled, we will go back to Mallorca (where he has lived most of the year with his partner)) .
Q: Are you used to going somewhere in the summer before?
A: No way, I don’t have summer. When I played, I spent time competing because it was the season of Roland Garros and Wimbledon and then the European tournaments, and I didn’t take a summer vacation, although other players did. Now not much, last year coincided with the Olympic Games, the previous two we escaped four or five days to Formentera, which is an island we love, super quiet, relaxation mode, not party mode. This is my first vacation after retirement.
Q: So, you have no doubts between the beach and the mountains?
A: Don’t believe it, I like the mountains, my family is more from the mountains, in fact we used to spend the summer with a tent on the Cabriel river, which is near Valencia. We were gone for two months, though now the sea pulled me more: perhaps the mountains were more than other seasons.
Q: On summer days, how would you like to disconnect?
A: I was very active at work but then I was a very calm person, I didn’t need big plans. Maybe we’re closer to the beach or maybe we’re in the pool. We like to choose good restaurants, we really enjoy gastronomy, but nothing good.
Q: Now that you live in Mallorca, paella or stew?
A: Paella, paella. In fact, every year at the tournament, where one of our sponsors is Dacsa, we make paella for the players.
They tell me they have tried it in some cities in Spain and I tell them that the real paella is Valencian. I really like rice, paella, baked rice, honeyed rice … and Antonio, who is from Madrid, at first bothered me and told me “You are very demanding of paella”, but because he is half Valencian, they say he to me. : “Now I understand you”, because he had already tasted the real paella. When he goes there he realizes that they are offering him rice with utensils.
Q: Did you change your diet a lot after retiring from professional tennis?
A: Before I got pregnant, during the pandemic, I followed a fairly strict diet with sports, because I spent three months alone and physical activity helped me get through the day faster. I also became careful with my diet with repeated fasting and a different diet and I became fit. Since then, I’ve tried to keep the routine of taking care of myself with food, because as you get older it’s harder to maintain the figure. I wasn’t much of a whim, but in pregnancy, especially in the beginning, when I had a regular time with nausea and vomiting, I decided that if I wanted to eat something, some whim, I would eat it and that’s it. .
Q: Do you still do your hobby of puzzles?
A: What’s up? I’m making one in Mallorca with 13,000 pieces that I long ago started and left a little. A couple of months ago I took it up again, since it looks great for the child’s room because it’s the Disney orchestra with all the characters, but it doesn’t give me life, I don’t have material time to do it. As summer approached and it was hot, I had no desire to do it and I gave up on it.
Q: Are you also stuck with the series on digital platforms?
A: On the contrary, people have swallowed up digital platforms and I haven’t seen a series. Now I’m watching … I don’t even know the name … “The Lincoln Lawyer”, I think it’s called, and the other day I’m laughing because I’m stuck in chapter 6. I put it on and it lasted for thirty seconds, and I have been there three weeks.
Q: Do you love to read?
A: Actually not. You see, I tried, they gave me a Kindle and I couldn’t get it. I think it will help me a lot with vocabulary, because there are times when I need to speak and I will have a wider vocabulary, but I can’t. I feel bad because I think I need it, but between the job I have and the fact that I’m not very fond of it, it doesn’t really hook me up.
Q: You are the director of the WTA tournament in Valencia, the captain of the Spanish women’s tennis team and a television commentator. How do you plan to combine your work with motherhood?
A: The strategy is compliance -focused. It is clear that it is going to be very difficult to lead the same rhythm of life as before because I travel twenty-five weeks a year and with a child is very difficult, because I make these trips alone. The goal was to reduce the number of weeks but still doing my job.
Initially live due to maternity and paternity leave, we can combine it. The weeks he takes me, I can travel alone or with them, but when we don’t have this privilege, it’s a bit difficult. Since I’m a first-timer, I don’t know how I’m going to do it, maybe with someone’s help when the baby is already going to daycare and I don’t have to devote twenty-four hours to it.
The approach to motherhood is in the condition that, although it will change our lives, I will not lose the illusion that I have to carry out my projects, which are many and not just just travel. I also commented on television and there was the tournament I led. These are things that keep me active and make me happy and I don’t want to leave them, although, if I can do it, it’s something we’ll talk about in a year and a half, and I will. say “no” … or “yes”.
