Women’s Super League (WSL), the largest category of women’s football in England, will expand from twelve to fourteen teams from the 2026-2027 season.
Given the rumors indicating that this movement could end the descent, the competition announced that next year The first two teams of second division climbed automatically while The third is to play a playoff against the worst classification of the Women’s Super League.
WSL keeps the trip -round format and the three best classmates will go to the Women’s Champions League. The changes must be approved by the English Football Federation (FA).
“Expanding the WSL to 14 teams will stimulate the movement between the leagues and through the pyramid, which increases opportunities, “ stated Nikki Doucet, Executive Director of WSL.
“The introduction of a leading/descent tiebreaker creates a difference for women’s football and introduces a high match,” Doucet argued.
