Tiémoué Bakayoko, a Milan midfielder, denounced the conditions under which he was subjected to a police check on July 3 while driving with his family in a black SUV in the center of Milan.
The video of the arrest of the French player at gunpoint was released on Monday and went viral on social networks while receiving a lot of criticism to the point of being labeled “racist”.
What you see in the video
In the video, Bakayoko appears to be calm while being tased by a police officer, with his hands up and leaning on the police car.
Next to him, another member of the security forces pointed his pistol inside the car where Bakayoko had probably left.
A few seconds later, a third police officer with a gun, his partner and Bakayaoko approached. They exchanged a few words and, after recognizing him as a Milan footballer, they let him go.
the police version
In a statement quoted by the Italian press, the Milan prefecture said on Monday that Bakayoko and another member of the vehicle were subject to control because they resembled the description of two suspects in another case. The police force described the accusations of racial discrimination as “inappropriate comments”.
Bakayoko’s version
Now Bakayoko explained the version through a video posted on his Instagram account. “The Milan authorities communicated that it was a mistake that they realized at the time. To err is human, I have no problem with that, however the method and method used is a problem for me. I think it went even further,” explained French media originating from the Ivorian.
Why didn’t they just give me a proper check by simply asking me for the car papers?” asked Bakayoko, on loan from Chelsea to Milan after also playing for Rennes, Monaco and Naples.
“You don’t see everything in the video”
Bakayoko revealed that in the video “you don’t see everything, and I think that’s the calmest part of what happened. You need to know that I found the gun a meter away from me, in the passenger side window. They are clearly putting our lives at risk.”
And he concluded: “The consequences could have been more serious if I had not remained calm, if I had not done the work I was doing and they had not recognized me in time. What are the next steps? at the police station? These are the things that makes me think. It’s unacceptable to put lives at risk in this way.”
