The team Euskaltel Euskadi has been ascertained he will “leave his skin behind” in the Vueltawhich presented this Friday at its headquarters in Derio (Bizkaia) the pre-selection of twelve runners, from which eight will appear to compete.
Antonio Angulo, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Ibai Azurmendi, Mikel Bizkarra, Joan Bou, Carlos Canal, Unai Cuadrado, Gotzon Martín, Unai Iribar, Mikel Iturria, Txomin Juaristi and Luis Ángel Maté make the first list of the orange team, which must make four throws.
A first selection in which Jorge Azanza, team director, mixes the experience of cyclists like Maté or Mikel Bizkarra, who touched the stage win in last year’s edition, and youngsters like Xabier Azparren, always combative and looking for a great getaway. .
Azanza detailed that this previous list had 12 members to prevent possible injury, health or falls. The idea of the Navarrese coach is to “bring the best eight possible and guarantees” with the aim of putting the “culmination” of the season in the Vuelta.
“We will try, like last year, to be realistic because it is a WorldTour race, but we will fight to have the biggest presence,” he added.
A large part of the cyclists who make up this pre-selection for La Vuelta will also be the protagonists of the intense weekend for Euskaltel Euskadi, which wants to stand out in the two events that it “marked with fire” in its calendar: the Clásica de San Sebastián, which will take place on Saturday, and the Getxo Circuit, which will take place on Sunday.
La Vuelta 2022, which starts on August 19 in Utrecht and will tour the Netherlands for three days, is exciting for Euskaltel-Euskadi. The orange team faces a second consecutive participation in La Vuelta and they do not want to be overlooked, mainly in the three stages that will be run in the Basque territory, on August 23 (Vitoria-Laguardia), 24 (Irún-Bilbao) and 25 (start of Bilbao).
Also, because it marks the 25th anniversary of Euskaltel’s entry as sponsor of the cycling squad in the 1997 Vuelta a España, an event that was “a huge success for the brand and the team” and prompted the birth of tide orange, as pointed out by Koldo Unanue, Director of Marketing at Euskaltel.
Unanue announced that 7,000 orange shirts will be distributed during the LaVuelta. “The orange tide is still very much alive”, he indicated in this regard. EFE
