After the removal of the wolf marked “158 MATK” was recommended by the supervisory board on Monday and the Tyrolean state government approved the associated endangerment ordinance the following day, the decision prepared by the responsible department is now available. The shooting permit is therefore valid until 31 October. The decision is issued to persons who are allowed to hunt in 39 subareas.
The notice states that a wolf in sub-areas of hunting in the municipalities of Ellbogen, Kolsassberg, Matrei am Brenner, Navis, Patsch, Rinn, Schmirn, Sistrans, Tulfes, Tux, Volders, Wattenberg, Wattens and Weerberg until the end of the alpine season on December 31 October is excluded from the closed season all year round.
Suspension effect withdrawn
The decision can be appealed within four weeks. However, the suspensive effect of each complaint was withdrawn,” the state said Friday.
According to the state, multiple cracks in the municipal areas of Ellbogen and Tulfes could be assigned to the Wolf 158 MATK based on DNA testing. “According to the experts’ analysis, cracks in Wattenberg can probably also be attributed to this wolf,” it said.
Shooting order for fighters problematic
Hunting wolves is problematic for Tyrolean hunters: on the one hand, because of the lack of a legal basis in the hunting law, on the other hand, because of the threat of reprisals from militant animal rights activists. In the worst case, there are no hunters who shoot the problem wolf. “The wolf is not the subject of the hunters. But of course we don’t want to abandon agriculture. But it will depend on what the decision looks like,” state fighter master Anton Larcher said on Thursday.
Despite this, even more cracks have been reported in Tyrol in recent days:
- Anras (Bezirk Lienz): Ten dead and four injured sheep were recorded on an alpine pasture, the assessment of the injured sheep suggesting a wolf as the cause.
- Obertilliach (Lienz district): Two dead sheep on an alpine pasture, another 30 animals are missing.
- Prägraten (Lienz district): The involvement of a large carnivore cannot be ruled out in a rift in the municipality of Prägraten.
- Ehrwald (Reutte district): Footage from a wildlife camera in the Ausserfern (Ehrwald) was sent to the authorities. These show a high probability of a wolf. A dead lamb that was officially examined today, Friday, was thought to be possible for a large predator and appropriate samples were taken. A total of nine dead lambs were reported to authorities.
