Regional athletics breaks record for participation in European Championships in Munich

Date:

Katir, Mariano García, Sergio López, Miguel Ángel López, Manu Bermúdez and Iván López, on the list from Spain

Regional athletics is at its best. It will be present at the absolute European Outdoor Championship, to be held in Munich from 15 to 21 August, with the largest representation in its history and the highest level. Six athletes from Murcia have qualified to participate in this event, with 93 Spanish athletes. Heading the poster is Mo Katir, a brand new 1,500 bronze medalist at the last World Cup held in Eugene, Oregon, in July. In the capital of Bavaria, however, the Asics Running middle distance runner will not do a double, as he wanted, and will complete the 5,000-meter test, a distance at which he is the current champion of Spain.

Jose Peiró, national team manager, said that “Katir told us he wanted to double at 1,500 and 5,000, but we let him know it was complicated. The moment it was necessary to decide, apart from knowing it was convenient or not, I discussed it with his coach, and given the events there could be an option, but once communicated to the European Athletics Federation there was no other decision.

While there isn’t an athlete who doubles in individual competitions in the list released by Peiró yesterday, there are those who take to the track twice, as is the case with Aljucer’s sprinter Sergio López. Just like in Eugene, the sprinter of the Sociedad Atlética Alcantarilla will compete in the 4×100 relay and in the first round of the 100-meter class.

The third athlete from the Murcia region to travel to Munich with the Spanish team is New Balance Team middle distance runner Mariano García. That of Cuevas de Reyllo will take part in an outdoor European championship for the first time.

The march will be the discipline with the largest number of representatives of the Region. There are three who are going to Germany in two weeks: Miguel Ángel López [UCAM]Manu Bermudez [Athleo Cieza] and Ivan Lopez [FC Barcelona]. In addition to the discipline in which they stand out, they all have a coach in common: José Antonio Carrillo from Cieza. Manu and Miguel Ángel will participate in the 35-kilometer test.

The second was tenth in Eugene, where he broke his own Spanish record in the distance (2.25.58). The sixth Murcia athlete in Munich is also the walker Iván López. The Yeclano will start in the 20-kilometer test.

Athletics will improve its largest representation at a European Championship in Munich. At Barcelona 2010, where they had their best record until yesterday, the Spanish team was present with four athletes from the region: the walkers Juanma Molina and Miguel Ángel López, the javelin thrower Rafael Baraza and the shot putter Úrsula Ruiz.
