“More than bad blood, the important thing is to win the duels”

Date:

“Someone has been itching lately in training, so maybe they are kicking or something (laughing). The important thing beyond that bad milk is to logically win the conflicts, the arguments. I have to steal and brace myself in those situations.”

Mikel Vesga has been one of Athletic’s most popular players so far this preseason. The player from Gasteiz seems to have settled in a midfield where Dani García, at least for now, has not counted much in recent campaigns. We will have to wait to see what Valverde’s final intentions are in this regard.

“I’m happy and adapting like all my teammates to the new things that the coach asks us in a position that perhaps I haven’t held for a long time, but in which I feel comfortable. I really want the ball to start rolling now because in the end, competing is the most beautiful thing of all”, he assures.

Vesga was very clear that Valverde “is a very close coach, who sent to all of us closely what he wants from us, how to plan matches. Everyone notices that confidence. I’m happy with how the preseason went, with how I see the team and with the feelings that remain.”

Gasteiztarra debuted as a lion in the hands of Valverde. Now everything is more or less the same, he says, compared to then: “Maybe before I didn’t pay as much attention to things as I do now, but I notice that the coaches’ concepts are almost the same. Logically adapted to the players currently in the squad; but with that idea of going up, pressing, attacking, playing on a rival field. We will maintain that and it is very good for us”.

Marcellin and Europe

Regarding the change of manager, Vesga said that “every coach has his own way of working, of expressing himself. What we learned from Marcelino, many of those good things, will logically remain because it has been good for us. Ernesto will add that extra that will be useful for us to grow and adapt better to what he wants”.

The ‘rojiblanco’ midfielder also clarified that “our goal is always to be as high as possible, leave Athletic in the best place and entering Europe is what we have been fighting for in recent years. Last year we were very close and logically we will fight for goals that are ambitious and that the team wants”.

On an individual level, Vesga points out that “I want to maintain regularity, keep growing, something I’m gradually achieving, and hopefully playing on the pitch and contributing the best for the team.”
